Introduction
Precipitation-hardening stainless grades solve a specific problem: how to get near-tool-steel strength while keeping stainless corrosion resistance and good fabrication behavior. 15-5PH does this by aging at a modest temperature after casting, precipitating fine copper-rich particles that lock the martensitic matrix in place. The result is a casting that can be machined in a soft condition and then aged to full strength — convenient, repeatable and documentable.
For structural engineers, 15-5PH is the conservative high-strength choice. Its improved transverse toughness over 17-4PH matters in parts that see multi-axial loads and fatigue, and its castability lets complex brackets be made as a single near-net-shape part instead of a welded fabrication. Production Process
Every 15-5PH casting begins with a review of the drawing and the specified temper, followed by hardened tooling sized for the run. Wax patterns are injected and assembled, then built into a fine silica sol ceramic shell. After dewaxing and pour, the casting is solution treated and aged to the target H-temper. Functional features are then CNC machined to drawing. Final inspection confirms chemistry, temper, dimensions and, where specified, NDT before certification and packing.

Tolerance Capability
As-cast 15-5PH features typically hold ISO 8062 CT4 to CT6 tolerances. The features that locate and function — mounting faces, bores, threads and datums — are refined on our CNC centers to ±0.01 mm so the part assembles without correction. Because the grade is machined before aging, we control distortion through the heat-treat cycle so finished features stay accurate.
Quality Control
Quality is engineered in, not inspected in. Our 15-5PH program includes:
