Duplex must be melted and poured within a tight chemistry and phase window or it loses the very properties that justify its cost. Introduction
Duplex stainless earns its place wherever chloride attacks. Seawater is the obvious case, but chemical wash, pulp liquor, flue-gas scrubbers and desalination brine are all chloride-rich environments that destroy ordinary stainless over time. A 2205 or 2507 casting resists pitting and crevice corrosion at chloride levels that would defeat 316, and it does so at roughly half the section thickness thanks to its higher strength — saving both material and weight.
For plant engineers and OEMs, the appeal is total cost of ownership. A duplex component costs more per kilogram than 316, but it lasts dramatically longer in service and lets designs use less material. Investment casting is the ideal process because it produces a single, dense, near-net-shape duplex part with the complex contours of pump, valve and fitment geometry — without the welded seams that trap chlorides and initiate crevice corrosion.

Production Process
Every duplex casting begins with grade selection and a review of the drawing for wall thickness, draft and service environment, followed by hardened tooling sized for the run. Wax patterns are injected and assembled, then built into a fine silica sol ceramic shell. After dewaxing, the heat is poured under controlled conditions to preserve the ferrite-austenite balance. The casting is cut from its runner and functional features are CNC machined to drawing. Final inspection confirms chemistry, phase balance, dimensions and, where specified, NDT before packing.
Material Options
We cast the duplex family to match duty:
- 2205 / 1.4462 — the standard duplex for seawater, chemical and offshore duty.
- 2507 / 1.4410 Super Duplex — for the highest chloride, pressure and temperature service.
- 2101 Lean Duplex — a cost-optimized duplex for less severe duty.
- Zeron 100 — a super duplex for aggressive seawater and subsea.
- CD3MN / CD4MCu — duplex and precipitation-strengthened grades for pump erosion-corrosion resistance.

Surface Finishing
Duplex surfaces must stay clean to resist crevice corrosion. We apply:
- Passivation — reinforces the chromium oxide film for long-term corrosion resistance.
- Electropolishing — smooths the surface so chlorides and biofouling have less to grip.
- Shot blasting / pickling — prepares and cleans the as-cast surface.
For seawater and hygienic duty, electropolishing is often the default finish.
Tolerance Capability
As-cast duplex features typically hold ISO 8062 CT4 to CT6 tolerances. The features that locate and seal — flanges, bores, faces and threads — are refined on our CNC centers to ±0.01 mm so the casting assembles without field correction. Because duplex work-hardens, we use rigid setups and tuned parameters so machined features are accurate and repeatable.
Quality Control
Quality is engineered in, not inspected in. Our duplex program includes:
- Heat chemistry and phase verification with a direct-reading spectrometer and ferrite check.
- Dimensional inspection on CMMs against the CAD model.
- Non-destructive testing — dye penetrant or radiographic inspection where the duty demands it.
- Traceability — material certificates, dimensional reports and process records travel with the order.
A foundry that cannot prove the phase balance of a duplex heat is a foundry you cannot qualify into corrosive service — so we make the evidence part of the product.

Technical FAQ
Duplex stainless has a mixed austenite and ferrite microstructure, roughly half and half, which gives it about twice the strength of 316 austenitic stainless and far better resistance to chloride pitting and stress-corrosion cracking.
2205 is the standard duplex for most seawater and chemical duties; 2507 super duplex is specified where chloride levels, pressures or temperatures are higher and only the best pitting resistance will do.
